Level 1 Award in British Sign Language
This BSL level 1 course is for those who wish to learn BSL in order to communicate with BSL users, such as friends, relatives, colleagues, or customers, or want to progress to more advanced study and/or employment using BSL in the future.
The BSL level 1 course can be taken without any previous BSL experience at any level. This qualification allows learners to gain basic skills and confidence in the two areas of production and reception of BSL.
This qualification is divided into three units, each of which can be achieved separately.
BSL101 – Introduction to British Sign Language
Understand and use a limited range of expressions in BSL, for example, meeting people, using numbers, transport, directions and weather.
BSL102 – Conversational British Sign Language
Simple conversations in BSL in relation to the home, people, pets, using numbers, hobbies/activities, food and drink.
BSL103 – Communicate in British Sign Language about everyday life
Take part in simple conversations in BSL relating to everyday life at school, college or work. Describe everyday life, places, buildings, people, using numbers, methods of transport and weather.
To achieve the full qualification in this BSL level 1 course, learners must pass all units.
Length of course: 30 weeks of 2 hours per week
